Why does stress cause muscle tension?

When we are in a dangerous situation, this triggers an immediate reaction designed to save us from the threat. This prepares us physically and mentally to fight for our own survival.

This reaction makes the muscles tense and contracted, and it prepares the body to defend itself.

When you have a large amount of stress, your body does not know what particular type of dangerous situation you have on hand.

This is because the signals sent by the brain are usually the same, and this applies to both a stressful situation at work and, say, a wild animal you encounter in nature that you perceive as a threat.
