The Lifeguards method is based on six morning exercises to help you achieve your goals on both a personal and professional level. It’s actually more than just a method – it’s a  philosophy of life that changes the way you see things and helps you focus on the goals you set.

What is the lifeguard method?

The Lifeguards Method is a concept created by Hal Elrod and was published in his book The Miracle of the Morning . In it, he talks about six exercises we should do during the first hour of the morning in order to focus on life and achieve everything we have undertaken.

Hal Elrod was involved in an accident that he survived like a miracle trade with almost no aftermath. In this book, he talks about his experience and what he has managed to achieve with this philosophy of life by following that ritual.

The Lifeguards method consists of six different exercises that you should do each morning. They are:

  1. Silence
  2. Confirmation sentences
  3. Visualization
  4. Exercise
  5. Reading
  6. Writing

They are based on the belief that the way you start your day has a huge impact on what it becomes. So if you start the day focusing on what you want to achieve, it will be easier to achieve.

If, on the other hand, you spend the first few moments of the morning paying attention to less important things like checking Whatsapp or email, you’re increasingly distracting from your goals during the day.

What kind of exercises should you do?

First, you should be aware that in order to follow this method, you must wake up every morning an hour earlier. To some people, this may seem like a futile effort, but the author emphasizes that it is important that you have enough time to do all the exercises.

1. Silence

You should  remain silent for the first five minutes after waking up. This reduces the amount of stress and anxiety during the day. You can use this time to meditate, reflect, focus on breathing, or create a goal for the day.

2. Confirmation sentences

You can do this by repeating certain phrases, goals, or objectives that make you feel better. You can use self-invented phrases, song lyrics, or book lyrics.

The idea is to  repeat the sentences daily to improve your mood and self-esteem. That way, you start the day much more motivated and energetic to achieve what you were aiming for.

3. Visualization

This exercise only takes five minutes. You should use the time to visualize in your mind just as if you have already achieved the goal you set for yourself.

It may sound strange, but when you repeat phrases that remind you that you can do something, and when you imagine you have already done it, it’s easier for you to focus on achieving your goals.

4. Exercise

You should dedicate at least 20 minutes to this workout. You can select the forms of exercise you want for this 20-minute period. This way you are able to activate your body and fill it with energy.

We recommend choosing aerobic exercise as it activates better. However, you can choose any form of exercise that makes you feel good, be it yoga, pilates or running.

5. Reading

As with exercise, you will spend 20 minutes on this exercise reading something that interests you. It can be a newspaper, a novel, or a text that motivates you and gets your thoughts focused on the topic.

6. Writing

You will spend the last minutes of this method writing. By writing, we mean that you should write down ideas, goals that come to mind, or just keep a personal diary.

It is recommended to write by hand in a notebook specifically used for this purpose.

Lifeguards method into routines

The author himself and many of his followers claim that if you follow this routine constantly, your life will improve and you used to see things. So it is easier for you to achieve your goal.

However, you yourself are the only one with the power to change your life and you should make an effort to follow this or any other method that will help you achieve your goals. You don’t have to follow this method in exactly the same way as the author of the book suggests, but you can customize these principles to fit your daily life.
